Volleyball Checks-In at #24 After 3-1 Weekend
Vincennes, IN – Calhoun Volleyball turned in another strong weekend of play at the Vincennes Showdown, going 3-1 across two days of competition. The Warhawks picked up wins over Wabash Valley, Edison State, and Lewis & Clark while battling closely with Division I Vincennes University in their only loss.
The weekend opened Friday with a convincing 3-1 win over Wabash Valley College (25-12, 26-28, 25-22, 25-21). Calhoun's balanced attack featured standout performances from Laney Kelley (12 kills, .500 hitting), Alana Allison (13 kills, .688), and setter Maddie Schwabe, who dished out 28 assists and added five aces. Lucy Means anchored the back row with 35 digs as the Warhawks controlled much of the match.
Later that evening, Calhoun went toe-to-toe with host Vincennes University, a Division I program receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DI poll. The Warhawks pushed the Trailblazers to the brink in all three sets before falling 26-24, 25-17, 27-25. Ava Boyll and Alana Allison led the offense, combining for 14 kills, while Means posted 28 digs to keep Calhoun within striking distance throughout.
The Warhawks bounced back strong on Saturday with a sweep of Edison State Community College (25-14, 25-23, 25-17). Kelley dominated at the net with 11 kills on .588 hitting, while Allison added eight kills and three aces. Schwabe and Amber Holshouser combined for 29 assists, and Means again led the defense with 15 digs as Calhoun handled the Chargers in straight sets.
Calhoun closed the weekend by defeating Lewis and Clark Community College 3-1 (25-16, 28-26, 24-26, 25-18). Boyll and Kelley led the way with 12 and 13 kills respectively, while Schwabe tallied 35 assists and six aces to spark the offense. Ashtyn Douglas and Lucy Means each made key defensive contributions, helping the Warhawks secure their third win of the tournament.
"This was a great weekend for our group," said Head Coach Jamiee Freeman. "We faced some tough opponents, including a strong Division I team, and our players responded with composure and focus. We're learning to execute our game plan consistently, and that's showing in our results."
The 3-1 showing at Vincennes improves Calhoun's record to 18-3 overall, and moves the program to a No. 24 national ranking. The Warhawks will return to action Friday, October 10, as they travel to compete in another weekend invitational.
