Flag Football Remains Unbeaten, Advances to 4-0
Montgomery, AL – Calhoun Flag Football remained unbeaten in their inaugural season, picking up two wins on Sunday to improve to 4-0. The Warhawks edged Shelton State 25-19 in overtime before blanking Lurleen B. Wallace 19-0 in Montgomery.
The opener against Shelton State proved to be a thriller. After the Bucs struck first, Calhoun responded with a 30-yard touchdown connection from Faith Roberson to Jonie Weems. The teams traded scores before Shelton tied the match late in regulation, sending it to overtime. The Warhawk defense stepped up when Charity Buchanon intercepted a pass at the goal line, setting up the winning drive. Roberson delivered the decisive strike, hitting Madison Allen in the corner of the end zone to seal the 25-19 victory.
Roberson finished 21-of-35 for 163 yards and three touchdowns, finding Allen, Buchanon, and Weems for scores. Leah Haynes led the defensive effort with seven tackles, two interceptions, and a pick-six, while Kaitlyn Lane was disruptive up front with five sacks. Paige Castrejon flipped field position repeatedly with three punts of more than 40 yards.
Calhoun carried that momentum into the second matchup, rolling to a 19-0 halftime lead against LBW. Though the Warhawks couldn't add to the scoreboard after the break, the defense dominated throughout. Buchanon collected three interceptions, Lily O'Neil added another, and Ja'kara Clark led with seven tackles. Tyler Stringer anchored the pass rush with three sacks and six forced passes.
Roberson again paced the offense, completing 20-of-30 passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Jasmine Collier and Kaitlyn Lane (two scores) provided the points to secure the shutout win.
"I'd like to see us be more consistent on offense than we were today," said Head Coach Bart Stephenson. "The defenses we faced did a great job putting pressure on our quarterback, but I'm proud of how our girls battled through it and still found ways to win. That shows the toughness and character of this team."
Calhoun (4-0) will return home on Sunday, September 28, hosting Wallace State in a doubleheader at Jack Allen Recreation Complex, with games scheduled for 3:30 and 5 p.m.
