A household name at Calhoun and in the Decatur area, Stephenson transitions into the role after six seasons guiding the Warhawks softball program, where he built a tradition of postseason success, academic achievement, and player advancement.

In 2023, Stephenson’s team once again featured multiple All-Conference performers, and his 2022 squad finished fourth in the ACCC Tournament with three players advancing to four-year programs. His 2021 team posted a 27-24 overall record, placing third in the ACCC Tournament. Over his time at Calhoun, Stephenson coached five All-Conference selections and saw ten of his student-athletes move on to continue their playing careers at four-year colleges. His teams also excelled in the classroom, regularly earning NJCAA and ACCC academic honors with strong GPAs and graduation rates.

Stephenson joined Calhoun in 2019 after serving as head football coach and assistant softball coach at New Hope High School (2018–2019). Prior to that, he led the football program at Winston County High School (2015–2017), and from 2012 to 2015, he was both head football and head softball coach at Hatton High School. His softball teams at Hatton made back-to-back AHSAA State Tournament runs, finishing third in 2012 and 2013. That same year, Stephenson was named Decatur Daily Coach of the Year.

From 2008 to 2012, he held multiple coaching roles at Decatur High School, including head softball coach, assistant varsity football coach, and head freshman football coach. Earlier in his career, he coached at his alma mater, Mount Hope High School, and spent the 2007 season as head baseball coach at Speake High School.

Stephenson competed for two seasons at Northwest Community College in Phil Campbell, Alabama, earning a selection to the Alabama Community College All-Star Game before continuing his collegiate baseball career at the University of West Alabama, where he earned his degree in Pyisical Education.

As a student-athlete at Mt. Hope High School, Stephenson earned First Team All-State honors in both football and baseball, was named one of the Top 10 Student-Athletes in America, and received a special invitation to the 1983 Olympic Baseball Trials. He also participated in the East-West Shrine Baseball Classic.

In 2008, Stephenson was inducted into the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame, joining his father Elwyn and brother Stan.

A native of Mt. Hope, Alabama, he is married to Karen Stephenson. Together, they have six children and twelve grandchildren.
