Warhawks' Four Home Run Win Highlights Wallace State Series
Hanceville, AL / Decatur, AL — Calhoun baseball continued ACCC play this past week, dropping three of four games to Wallace State but picking up a home win in game three behind a strong offensive performance. The Warhawks opened the series on the road in Hanceville on Thursday before returning to Decatur for the final two games on Saturday.
Game 1 – Wallace State 6, Calhoun 3 (7 innings)
Wallace State jumped out early and maintained control in the series opener.
The Lions struck for three runs in the first inning to put Calhoun on its heels. The Warhawks answered with a run in the second, but Wallace added three more in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-1. Calhoun responded with two runs in the sixth to narrow the gap, but could not generate additional offense down the stretch.
Josh Burrell got the start on the mound, with Tatum Sivley providing relief. Offensively, Calhoun totaled 12 hits, led by Seth Walton's 2-for-2 performance with two doubles, while Adam Yazel drove in two runs.
Game 2 – Wallace State 11, Calhoun 3 (7 innings)
The Lions carried their momentum into game two, building an early lead that proved too much for Calhoun to overcome.
Wallace State scored one run in the first, six in the second, and two in the third to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Calhoun got on the board with two runs in the fourth and added another in the sixth, but Wallace tacked on two more in the seventh to secure the run-rule victory.
Kaiden Wear, Bryant Jones, and Kai Kuroda combined on the mound for the Warhawks. Trent Wilson provided the offensive highlight with a home run and two RBI.
Game 3 – Calhoun 8, Wallace State 6 (7 innings)
Back in Decatur, Calhoun flipped the momentum in game three with a back-and-forth win fueled by power at the plate.
After Wallace State scored in the opening inning, the Warhawks responded with five runs in the bottom of the first to seize control. The Lions answered with five unanswered runs over the next three innings to reclaim a 6-5 lead, but Calhoun surged back in the fifth with three runs to go back in front, 8-6.
The Warhawks shut down Wallace State the rest of the way to secure the win. Seth Walton and Justin Slaton handled duties on the mound, while the offense erupted for 14 hits. Walton, William Singewald, Gavin Gonzalez, and Trent Wilson each hit home runs in the victory.
Game 4 – Wallace State 13, Calhoun 3 (8 innings)
In the series finale, Calhoun showed early life but could not keep pace as depth challenges took a toll.
The Warhawks scored in the first inning, but Wallace State answered with eight runs across the next three innings to take control. Calhoun added another run in the seventh, but the Lions pulled away with five runs in the eighth to end the game early.
Bryant Jones, Elijah Meares, Justin Slaton, and Kai Kuroda all saw time on the mound. Offensively, Calhoun recorded eight hits, highlighted by a 4-for-4 performance from Josh Burrell, who also drove in a run.
Head coach Cameron Chafetz reflected on the series following the weekend. "We're continuing to compete, but we've got to find a way to be more consistent across the board," Chafetz said. "There are stretches where we show what we're capable of, like in game three, but we have to sustain that level for an entire series. Right now, we're not doing enough of that to win consistently."
Calhoun will return to action on Thursday, April 23, hosting Northwest Shoals for a doubleheader.
