Softball Drops Series to Gadsden State
Gadsden, AL / Decatur, AL — Calhoun softball battled through adversity this past week, dropping four games to Gadsden State while showing toughness throughout the series, particularly in a high-scoring extra-inning finale. The Warhawks opened the series on the road in Gadsden on Thursday before returning home to Decatur for the final two games on Saturday.
Game 1 – Gadsden State 5, Calhoun 0
Calhoun opened the series shorthanded, battling illness within the roster in a 5-0 loss.
Gadsden State controlled the game throughout, while the Warhawks were limited offensively. Emily Burgreen accounted for Calhoun's lone hit, breaking up what would have been a no-hitter.
Game 2 – Gadsden State 10, Calhoun 6
The Warhawks responded with a stronger offensive showing in game two but were undone by one big inning from the Cardinals.
Calhoun totaled 10 hits and held a 4-3 lead midway through the fourth inning before Gadsden State erupted for six runs in the bottom half to take control. The Warhawks added runs late but could not recover from the deficit.
Kenley Holcombe led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Morgan Lane went 2-for-2 at the plate. Tessa Jacobs drove in three of Calhoun's six runs in the effort.
Game 3 – Gadsden State 5, Calhoun 0
Back in Decatur, Calhoun continued to battle through illness but could not break through offensively in another 5-0 loss.
The Cardinals scored all five of their runs across the first four innings, while the Warhawks were unable to capitalize on their opportunities despite recording five hits. Emily Burgreen again led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double.
Game 4 – Gadsden State 15, Calhoun 13 (8 innings)
The series finale turned into an offensive showcase, with both teams combining for 37 hits in a 28-run game that needed an extra inning to decide a winner.
Calhoun held a 1-0 lead through the early innings before the game broke open in the fifth. Gadsden State plated three runs in the top half, but the Warhawks answered with a seven-run inning to take an 8-3 lead into the sixth. The momentum quickly shifted again as the Cardinals erupted for eight runs in the top of the sixth, followed by three from Calhoun in the bottom half.
Both teams added two runs in the seventh to extend the game, but Gadsden State pushed across two runs in the top of the eighth and held Calhoun scoreless in the bottom half to complete the sweep.
The Warhawks saw multiple standout performances at the plate, led by Emily Burgreen, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Madison Allen added a 3-for-4 effort with a double, while Tessa Jacobs delivered a 4-for-5 performance with three RBI. Emily Jones also contributed, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Head coach Denton Bowling reflected on the weekend following the series. "We struggled this weekend," Bowling said. "We had some players dealing with sickness, but at the end of the day we didn't get it done as a team. We've got to be better across the board and find a way to put complete games together."
Calhoun will return to action on Thursday, April 16, hosting nationally ranked No. 11 Wallace State for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
