Baseball Steals Road Win at Southern Union
Decatur, AL / Wadley, AL — Calhoun baseball faced another challenging ACCC series this past week, dropping three of four games to Southern Union while managing to steal a road win against the Bison.
The Warhawks opened the series at home in Decatur on Thursday before traveling to Wadley for the final two games on Saturday.
Game 1 – Southern Union 16, Calhoun 4 (6 innings)
Southern Union pulled away late in the opener, using big middle innings to secure a run-rule victory.
The Bison built an early 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first two innings, but Calhoun responded with a pair of runs in both the second and third to even the score at 4-4. From there, Southern Union took control, plating three runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth, and six in the sixth to close out the game.
Despite the loss, Calhoun saw solid offensive contributions from Trent Wilson, who drove in a run, and William Singewald, who delivered a two-run home run.
Game 2 – Southern Union 13, Calhoun 8
In the second game of the doubleheader, Calhoun showed fight but could not keep pace with Southern Union's steady offensive production.
Trailing 2-0 into the bottom of the fourth, the Warhawks surged ahead with a five-run inning to take a 5-2 lead. The advantage was short-lived, as the Bison answered with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to regain control. Southern Union continued to add on with runs in the seventh and eighth innings to extend the lead.
Calhoun added three more runs late, but the deficit proved too much to overcome. Trent Wilson continued his strong day at the plate, driving in two runs to bring his total to three RBI across the doubleheader.
Game 3 – Calhoun 4, Southern Union 3
Calhoun responded on the road with a hard-fought win in game three, edging Southern Union 4-3 in Wadley.
Locked in a 1-1 tie entering the sixth inning, the Warhawks took a 2-1 lead before the Bison answered with two runs to move back in front, 3-2. Calhoun delivered the decisive response in the seventh, scoring twice to reclaim the lead and ultimately secure the victory.
Cody Hodges earned the win on the mound, while Adam Yazel and Jackson Firestone each drove in key runs for the Warhawks.
Game 4 – Southern Union 12, Calhoun 5
Southern Union regained momentum in the series finale, jumping out early and never looking back in a 12-3 win.
The Bison struck for six runs in the first inning and added two more by the sixth to build an 8-0 advantage. Calhoun plated two runs in the sixth and added another in the seventh, but could not generate enough offense to close the gap.
Head coach Cameron Chafetz addressed the team's performance following the series. "We're just not playing great baseball right now," Chafetz said. "We've got some guys who are capable of doing really good work for us, but we're not getting the consistent answers and effort we need across the board. That's something we have to clean up quickly."
Calhoun will return to action on Thursday, April 9, hosting Gadsden State for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
