Baseball Wins 3, Takes Series from Lawson State
Birmingham, AL / Decatur, AL — Calhoun baseball earned a key conference series win this week against Lawson State, taking three of four games across Thursday and Saturday in Alabama Community College Conference play.
Calhoun dropped the opener in Birmingham before rallying to win the final three games of the series.
Game 1 – Lawson State 13, Calhoun 3 (6 innings)
The series opener quickly turned difficult for the Warhawks after starter Cody Hodges exited following the first inning with a hamstring injury.
Calhoun briefly grabbed momentum in the third inning, scoring two runs, but Lawson State answered immediately with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and added two more in the fourth.
The Warhawks plated another run in the fifth, but the Cougars broke the game open with a seven-run sixth inning to secure the 13-3 run-rule victory.
Game 2 – Calhoun 9, Lawson State 6
The Warhawks responded in game two with a strong offensive showing, outlasting the Cougars 9-6 after nine innings.
Calhoun seized control of the game with a three-run sixth inning and later added an insurance run in the eighth to secure the win.
After recording just five hits in the opener, the Warhawks erupted for 15 hits in the nightcap. Trent Wilson led the offensive charge with a 2-for-4 performance and four RBI.
Game 3 – Calhoun 10, Lawson State 8
The series shifted to Decatur on Saturday, where Calhoun continued their momentum with a 10-8 victory.
Bryant Jones earned the start on the mound and delivered three solid innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run.
Lawson State managed to score in five of the seven innings played, but the Warhawks' offense provided enough support with key scoring bursts, including a four-run second inning, two runs in the fifth, and another four-run frame in the sixth.
Trent Wilson stayed hot at the plate with three RBI, while Taisuky Rodriguez added a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI.
Game 4 – Calhoun 6, Lawson State 3
Looking to secure the series with a third victory, head coach Cameron Chafetz turned to Josh Burrell for the finale, and the sophomore delivered a dominant outing.
Burrell tossed a complete-game nine innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs while striking out 15 Cougar batters.
The Warhawk offense provided timely support, scoring six runs behind strong performances from Jayson Smith, who went 2-for-4, and Jackson Firestone, who finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Calhoun's pitching and timely hitting secured the 6-3 victory and a 3-1 series win.
After the series, Head Coach Cameron Chafetz commented on the strategy for the weekend. "Going into the weekend we knew we had to play for three or four wins, we didn't want to settle for just splitting the series," Chafetz said. "We saved Burrell for that last game and trusted him to give us a full nine, and he absolutely delivered. That was an incredible performance on the mound. At the same time, we're starting to see some guys really buy in and step up where we need them, and that's what helped us finish the series strong."
The Warhawks will continue conference play on Thursday, March, 19 when they host Snead State.
