Men's Basketball Stomps Coastal South, 104-80
Bay Minette, AL – Calhoun delivered an all-around team performance on Thursday night, racing past Coastal Alabama South 104-81 in a dominant road victory.
Just like in the teams' previous meeting in Decatur, the Warhawks wasted no time asserting control. Jackson Porch drilled the opening three-pointer of the game, setting the tone for what would become a relentless offensive showcase. From that point forward, Calhoun dictated the tempo and never allowed the Coyotes to settle in.
In typical Calhoun fashion, defensive intensity fueled the offensive explosion. The Warhawks applied constant pressure, forcing turnovers that quickly turned into transition opportunities on the other end. Live-ball steals led to easy finishes at the rim, and the fast pace kept Coastal Alabama South scrambling to recover.
The Coyotes opened the game in a 2-3 zone, hoping to slow Calhoun's rhythm and force outside shots. Instead, the Warhawks moved the ball crisply, attacked gaps, and consistently found high-percentage looks. Whether it was knocking down perimeter shots or collapsing the defense and finishing inside, Calhoun found answers on nearly every possession.
By halftime, the Warhawks had built a 12-point advantage behind balanced scoring and suffocating defense. The second half brought more of the same. Calhoun continued to push the pace, extended defensive pressure beyond the arc, and steadily widened the gap. The lead ballooned to 24 as the Warhawks overwhelmed the Coyotes on both ends of the floor.
It was a true team effort, with seven Warhawks finishing in double figures. Jeremiah Police and Johnathan Johnson each recorded double-doubles, anchoring the performance with strong play on the glass and efficient scoring inside. The balanced attack made it nearly impossible for Coastal Alabama South to key in on any one scorer, while Calhoun's defensive energy never wavered.
Head coach Derrick Powell credited his team's defensive approach as the catalyst for the offensive outburst. "Our defensive pressure was outstanding tonight," Powell said. "We were active in the passing lanes, we contested everything, and most importantly, we turned stops into scores. When we're able to convert defense into easy transition points, that's when we're at our best. I thought our guys shared the ball, played unselfish, and competed for 40 minutes."
The victory improves Calhoun to (16-10, 6-4) on the season. The Warhawks will return home Monday, Feb. 23, to face Gadsden State (16-10, 6-4) at 7:30 p.m. inside Kelley Gymnasium.
