Men's Golf Wins Coastal Alabama North Invitational
Brewton, AL – Calhoun men's golf delivered a championship performance Monday and Tuesday, capturing the team title at the Coastal Alabama North Invitational at Juniper Creek Golf Club.
The Warhawks set the tone early, firing a team score of -1 in Monday's opening round, the only team in the field to finish under par. Calhoun built a commanding nine-stroke lead after day one, well ahead of Coastal Alabama South, which posted +8 in the first round.
Sophomore Jayce Hutchens led the way in round one with an impressive 70 (-2), highlighted by six birdies. Freshman Sammy Holmes followed closely with a 71 (-1), shooting par or better on 15 of 18 holes. Reece Hardiman added a steady even-par 72 to round out a dominant opening day for the Warhawks.
On Tuesday, Calhoun posted a team score of +12, finishing the 36-hole event at +11 overall. Jesse Kilgore paced the Warhawks in the second round with a 73 (+1), as Calhoun maintained their composure and held off the field to secure the championship by six strokes over Shelton State.
In a field of nearly 80 golfers, every Calhoun player finished inside the top 30. Reece Hardiman placed eighth overall, while Sammy Holmes finished 11th. Jayce Hutchens and AJ Bradford each tied for 13th. Jesse Kilgore earned a 22nd-place finish, and Jackson Yeager, competing as an individual, placed 28th.
Head coach Richard Morgan praised his team's focus and consistency across both days. "I'm incredibly proud of the way these guys competed," Morgan said. "They showed a lot of composure, especially coming in with the lead. We had two really strong days and stayed locked in from start to finish. We are going to enjoy this one for now, but start looking ahead again quickly to keep competing this year."
Calhoun will return to action March 2-3 at the Ron Marshall Spring Fling.
