Baseball Falls on the Road at Bevill, 12-8
Fayette, AL – Calhoun baseball dropped a road contest Saturday afternoon, Feb. 14, falling 12-8 to Bevill State in a nine-inning game.
The Bears jumped out early, building a 9-1 lead through the first three innings and forcing the Warhawks to play from behind for most of the afternoon.
Calhoun chipped away in the middle innings, scoring once in the top of the fifth before plating four runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-6. The rally was fueled by timely hits and aggressive baserunning, but Bevill State answered with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to extend its lead to 12-6.
The Warhawks added two more runs in the eighth inning, but the early hole proved too much to overcome in the 12-8 final.
Adam Yazel led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in two runs and adding a stolen base. Austin Williamson doubled and drove in three runs, while Noah Alburquerque added a double, two stolen bases, and scored twice. William Singewald collected two hits, and Gavin Gonzalez added an RBI.
Calhoun was aggressive on the bases, swiping five bags in the contest, but defensive miscues and early free passes allowed Bevill State to seize momentum.
On the mound, Bryant Jones got the start, with Kaiden Wear following in relief. Justin Slaton provided 2.1 scoreless innings to steady things in the middle frames, and Tatum Sivley closed out the final three innings.
"I thought our effort was good and I liked the way we kept fighting to get back in it," Head Coach Cameron Chafetz said. "But we made too many mistakes defensively, and you can't afford that on the road. If we expect to win games, we have to play clean baseball. Effort is there, now it's about execution."
The Warhawks will look to get back in the win column as they take the field at home on Thursday, February 19, against Lincoln Trail and Alpena College.
