Warhawks Back on Track with Win at Southern Union, 94-82
Wadley, AL – Calhoun men's basketball snapped a two-game skid with a 94-82 victory over Southern Union on Thursday night, completing the regular-season sweep of the Bison. The Warhawks had defeated Southern Union earlier in the season on January 15 at home, 108-80, and came into the rematch determined to stay consistent in conference play.
Southern Union came out firing, knocking down early shots while Calhoun's offense struggled to find its rhythm. Despite the early offensive woes, the Warhawks stayed true to their identity, battling on the boards and maintaining high-intensity defense. Trailing 49-32 at the half, Calhoun's full-court pressure and relentless energy fueled a second-half surge, turning turnovers into points and igniting a 62-point outburst to take control of the game. Calhoun seized the lead with 6:04 remaining and never looked back.
Five Warhawks reached double figures, led by Jordan Johnson with 25 points and Carson Muse contributing 14. Sayiid Allen provided a spark off the bench, energizing the team with hustle plays and relentless effort on both ends of the floor.
Head Coach Derrick Powell praised his team's resiliency and the special circumstances of the win. "This win meant a lot to me," Powell said. "Not only to finish the sweep of a tough team and get back on track with a conference win, but to do it in front of the family I've got in the area in attendance tonight was special for me personally. I credit my guys for stepping up in the second half and having a little extra in it for me."
Calhoun (14-10, 4-4) will now turn their attention to Shelton State (19-5, 6-2), looking to avenge an earlier loss when the teams meet Monday, February 16, at 7:30 p.m. at home.
