Baseball Dominates Columbia State, 10-1
Decatur, AL – Calhoun baseball returned home Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 11, earning a decisive 10-1 victory over Columbia State in a nine-inning contest at Fred Frickie Field.
The win marked the Warhawks' most complete performance of the early season, as Calhoun combined timely hitting with strong pitching to control the game from start to finish.
The Warhawks plated 10 runs on eight hits while drawing nine walks, consistently applying pressure throughout the lineup.
Gavin Gonzalez led the offensive effort, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk. Austin Williamson added a double among his two hits and drove in a run, while William Singewald also collected an RBI.
Jayson Smith Jr. finished with a hit, two walks, an RBI, and a stolen base, and Adam Yazel reached base three times, driving in a run. Noah Alburquerque also added an RBI, while Jayden Arroyo scored twice as Calhoun capitalized on free passes, as the Warhawks swiped three bases in the contest.
On the mound, Cody Hodges set the tone, allowing just one hit and one run over four innings while striking out three to earn with win. Josh Burrell was finished strong in relief, tossing five shutout innings and allowing only three hits to close out the game.
After the win, Head Coach Cameron Chafetz credited his team's response following a tough weekend. "We started to put some things together today," Chafetz said. "We were hard on these guys this week at practice after Saturday, and I'm proud of how they responded this afternoon. That's the standard, competing, executing, and playing clean baseball for nine innings."
Calhoun will return to action Saturday, Feb. 14, traveling to Bevill State for a single nine-inning game scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
