Pyles Scores 26 in Loss at Gadsden
Gadsden, AL – Calhoun women's basketball endured a tough night on the road Monday, falling 90–62 at Gadsden State as the Warhawks struggled to slow the host's offensive momentum.
The opening minutes showed promise for Calhoun, which struck first and came out with early energy. That momentum was short-lived, however, as Gadsden State quickly found its rhythm. The Cardinals poured in 24 points in the opening quarter, setting the tone for what became a hot shooting night and forcing Calhoun to play from behind early.
By halftime, the Warhawks trailed 45–33, and any hopes of a turnaround stalled coming out of the break. Calhoun struggled to execute offensively in the third quarter, while Gadsden continued to add to the margin. Turnovers and missed opportunities compounded the issue, as the Warhawks finished the night with 15 turnovers and shot just 29 percent from the field.
Despite the final score, Calhoun had bright individual performances. Victoria Pyles led the way with 26 points, accounting for nearly half of the Warhawks' scoring on the night. Off the bench, Jamya Glover delivered a strong all-around effort, recording a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Head Coach Candace Byrd pointed to flashes of progress amid the setback. "We had some bright spots with Tori and Jam tonight," Byrd said. "We just need to get all the pieces running at the same time. Once we do that, we will put ourselves in a much better position to win these games."
Calhoun (11-11, 2-5) will look to right the ship when they travel to Southern Union (7-11, 0-7) on Thursday, Feb. 12, for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
