Warhawks Drop Two Against Wallace State
Decatur, AL – It was a tough Saturday for Calhoun Flag Football, as the Warhawks dropped both games of a doubleheader to Wallace State, falling 53-13 in the opener and 57-0 in the second contest.
In Game 1, the Warhawks showed flashes on both sides of the ball. Madison Allen led the receiving corps with 7 catches for 63 yards, while Kaitlyn Lane added a touchdown on 3 receptions for 11 yards. Leah Haynes chipped in 5 catches for 14 yards. Quarterback Faith Roberson went 21-for-38 with 97 passing yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 25 yards on 4 carries.
Defensively, the Warhawks forced three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by Haynes. Lily O'Neil and Reiley Williamson also picked off passes, while Williamson anchored the defense with 6 tackles and a sack. Despite those highlights, the Lions' speed and relentless defensive pressure proved too much to handle.
Game 2 mirrored the first, with Wallace controlling from start to finish. Roberson and Haynes combined for 34 passing yards, while Haynes added 35 yards rushing on 5 carries and Roberson chipped in 44 yards on 3 attempts. Defensively, Haynes and Roberson each recorded interceptions, while Williamson and Haynes led with 5 tackles apiece.
The Warhawks were hampered by early injuries to key players in Game 1 that carried over into the second matchup, making it even tougher to sustain offensive drives. Wallace also added to the challenge by wearing white shorts with white flags, which drew 15-yard penalties for improper equipment at the start of each game but still complicated things for Calhoun's defense.
Head Coach Bart Stephenson reflected on the difficult day: "That [improper equipment] didn't make it any easier on our girls, but the bigger issue was we really didn't have an answer for their defensive pressure. Losing key players early also hurt us, and we just couldn't recover. We'll have to rest up, get healthy, and be ready to go on Thursday."
Calhoun (4-2) will look to bounce back on Thursday, October 2, when they travel to Snead State for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
